My cat’s gone off her food?
Hi I was wondering if anyone’s had a similar problem with their cat.
She’s about 18 years old and has recently had some problems with her gums that the vet said was probably gingivitisis. She’s had several appointments with the vet where they gave her antibiotics and anti-inflammatory to keep the pain away. She seemed to be fine but after her last appointment she’s completely gone off her food and isn’t drinking any water. For a couple of days we were able to hand feed her tiny niblets of chicken and duck until she felt full, but over the weekend she just runs away when you try to go near her.
She’s been hiding under my bed all weekend and when she went out this morning for some fresh air, would not budge when we called her in (my sister had to chase her around the garden to get her back in)
I think she might have gone senile with old age. Has anyone else ever heard of this happening? or had a similar experience themselves? I just don’t want to keep sending her back and forth to the vet to have more injections if they’re not doing her any good. The vet has suggested she could have cancer in her gums so we’re now facing agonizingsing decision of whether to send her fobiopsyposy and what do we do if it comes back positive. At this rate she’ll be starving herself to death!

Im really really sorry but your cat sounds really poorly and I would phone the vets just to gain some advice. The eating isn’t too much of a problem but the drinking is, she will get very dehydrated very quickly and then it can cause all kind of complications. The eating could be because she is in pain but she needs to get fluids into her.
She’s a good age and it may be worth considering the kindest option. If you have the tests done and they come back positive would you really want her to go through all that treatment anyway especially with her being an ‘old girl’?
she could be avoiding you because she is in pain and doesn’t want to be messed with, cats normally take themselves away when they are unwell and tend to prefer being alone.
I really wish I could give you a solution as I know how heart breaking it is to watch a cat suffer; I wish you all the luck in the world.
I feel so very heartfelt sorry for you. Your baby girl is a ripe old age and most people I’ve known and even myself have not ever had a cat to live that long. I would be very grateful for her having such a long life to enjoy playing, comfort, and companionship that cats have to offer. I lost my Smokey Joe russian blue at the age of five about 6 months ago to FIP. He was never sick, but stopped eating and drinking and within two months had lost 7 lbs. He was going down hill fast and wasn’t doing any of the things he used to do. He stopped sleeping with me and stopped playing and just layed around in the middle of the bedroom and wouldn’t even meow or look at me. He then hid in the corner and wouldn’t move. I knew that this is the way cats show they want to be left alone and that they are ready to go to kitty heaven. Let her go with her own dignity left. Please don’t put her through all the agony that is positively yet to come. Just know that she is running away from you because she wants to die in peace, and cats have much pride when it comes to going home. Just remember each of the cats we are given, come with limited time. The cats are given to us for companion, warmth and love. But only for a short period of time. Then they must go home. I know my Smokey Joe isn’t sick anymore where he is now. He’s over Rainbow Bridge and running and playing and is much better off in Heaven than being here on Earth suffering. How hard was it for me in his final days?….Oh my, I still cry every night, I love him so much, he was my baby boy~! I raised him from five weeks old…trained him and he was my best friend and companion, as I was alone without him. You’ve shared a long full life with your baby girl, now it’s time for no more suffering. She is ready to go on home.
